The Mersey Beat Explosion

mersey_beat_beatles_poll

When the Beatles released Love Me Do, it sat in the UK pop charts somewhere below Elvis Presley and, Cliff Richard and the Shadows. Personally, I didn’t like it, preferring instead recent singles by The Four Seasons and Del Shannon.

A year or two earlier, The Tornados had a hit with an instrumental called Telstar.  After the launch of the first communications satellite of the same name by the Soviet Union, the word was that The Tornados would replace The Shadows as the UK’s leading instrumental pop group.  It didn’t happen and The Tornados quickly disappeared over the horizon (lost somewhere in deep space, I think!).

Then, in 1963, the Mersey sound exploded on the chart scene, with The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Searchers and Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, etc., all scoring number one hits.  In fact, Gerry and the Pacemakers had the most immediate national success and popularity but soon The Beatles were way on top!

The song that clinched the title for The Beatles was Please Please Me. It was rhythmically, instrumentally and vocally different from everything else and stood out as a unique recording.  Now it’s easy to hear the influence of Chuck Berry and some of the other American Blues guys, but then it was like a breath of fresh air!  Whoosh….

Then the word was that The Beatles would replace The Shadows as the UK’s leading rock group.  It did happen, and on a rather grand scale!  The rest, as they say, is history.

The Blue Beatles Duo performed LIVE in Caversham

The Blue Beatles tribute duo returned to Caversham by popular demand last Saturday (9th June 2012) for another great night.

Their new show featured many of The Beatles early Rock'n'Roll hits with full backing tracks including She Loves You, A Hard Day's Night, Help, Twist & Shout, etc., plus orchestral accompaniment for later hits such as All You Need Is Love, Yellow Submarine, Eleanor Rigby, etc.

They also performed tracks which the duo had previously performed acoustically. Now they have full backing tracks for some of the rarer songs including This Boy, Do You Want To Know A Secret? and You're Gonna Lose That Girl.

There was a great turn-out and many commented on the authentic sound of the duo.

Private Party - Swanage - 20th March 2010

Blue-Beatles-black-and-whitThe Blue Beatles are played a private 40th birthday party in Swanage, near Bournemouth on 20th March 2010.

The client has asked them to play an extra set of classic 50s Rock'n'Roll tunes from some of the Beatles original Hamburg and Cavern Club repertoire, including a number of classics from Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins and Buddy Holly.

"We're really looking forward to it," says Scott, the rhythm guitarist in the band.  We like to play all styles of Rock'n'Roll, and this gig will give us the opportunity to really "let rip".
